Travel Nursing Assignments: Live Like A Local – Sayre, PA!

Welcome to Sayre, Pennsylvania

This little corner of Pennsylvania offers the very best of small-town life. If you’re thinking about where to head for your next travel nursing assignment and like the idea of a sleepy town where everything is in walking distance, and there’s an abundance of places to hike and explore nearby, Sayre might be the place for you. Though it may be small, you’ll never be left wondering what to do here.

Nestled by the northern border between Pennsylvania and New York, and right next to the Susquehanna River, this quaint town offers a relaxed, family-friendly vibe situated around an excellent hospital – the Guthrie Robert Packer Hospital, which has a history of expertly serving patients from the Twin Tiers region of PA and NY for over 130 years.

Around the City

To find out all about the rich history of Sayre and some of its landmarks, head to the Sayre Historical Society – even if it’s just to appreciate the gorgeous building it now occupies, which is a former train station! Train buffs will also enjoy the model train exhibits and old train memorabilia.

Howard Elmer Park, adjacent to the hospital, offers the perfect spot to relax, picnic and read on your lunch break. It also hosts regular farmers markets on weekends, concerts and events at the bandstand in the warmer months, and Christmas activities during the winter months.

Sayre has many other parks and places to walk around, including the Sayre Pond, the Riverfront Park, and the Glenn Clark Memorial Playground. These all offer great spaces for family entertainment, fishing, and just taking a tranquil walk to clear your head. If you’re looking to venture further afield, the Round Top Recreation Area, Waverly Glen Park & Civil War Cannon, the Susquehanna River Archeological Centre, and the Two Rivers Park & garden, are all close by.

Farmers Market

Shoppers will not be disappointed, as Sayre has a number of specialty and independent shops, consignment, thrift, antique and vintage shops (such as the wonderfully named Sayre-n-dipity), and department store Peebles, as well as larger supermarkets like Walmart. Gamers will enjoy Keystone Cards for its wealth of tabletop (board and card) games, as well as video games, movies and collectibles, and its friendly atmosphere which welcomes new and experienced players for tournaments and events.

Sayre

Another benefit of Sayre is that you get the small-town atmosphere, but are still close to the likes of New York City and Philadelphia, which are less than 4 hours drive away, and you can even drive to Toronto in less than 5 hours.

Entertainment

Locals recommend grabbing a pack of Red Vines and heading to the Sayre Theatre during the week, for movies but also for the occasional live performances and special events. It’s a beautiful renovated old opera house that still retains its 20th century charm, with lots of old features such as classic red drapes and high ceilings.

If you’re into quilting, or would like to start up a new creative hobby, the Friendship Star Quilt Shop is just a short drive from Sayre and offers personalized classes, fabric, and anything you could ever need for quilting and sewing.

The Sayre Public Library is also a fantastic hub for community events. They host regular book sales, cultural talks and tech workshops, as well as a wealth of events for children.

For those with kids (or young relatives visiting), the Farmland Animal Park is the perfect destination – it’s educational and fun for all the family!

Food and Drink

If you’re a fan of dining out, Sayre will not disappoint – it’s replete with independent, good-quality restaurants which could easily compete with the likes of any large city’s eateries.

For the best ‘American’-style food, head to local favorite The Grille at the Train Station for big eats in a cool setting. For pizza and pasta, Original Italian Pizza is the place to go. And if wings are your thing, Alliger’s House of Wings will cater to any spice and flavor requirements.

If you’re hungry at lunchtime, look no further than the Parrish Family Deli or Celebrations Black Diamond Cafe. Both are popular with residents for their tasty menus and friendly service.

In terms of booze, Sayre has a pretty good selection of drinking spots for a small town. Craft beer enthusiasts will love Bluestone Brewing Company, with their incredible selection of regular and specialty brews you can drink right on the premises in their brewpub.

If going in a group, the Hotel Bradford Brew House & Beer Garden is perfect as they have a fantastic selection of craft beer, wines and cocktails.

For music and drinks of an evening, Rock & Doc’s pub is the place to go – they have a great jukebox, ‘pub sports’ such as darts and pool, and a dance floor to end the night on.

Wine lovers will rejoice at the fact that Sayre is incredibly close to the Finger Lakes region of New York, which is popular for its vineyards and perfect for a summertime wine tour.
