For instance, did you know Durham is home to the world’s largest and most diverse collection of lemurs outside of Madagascar? That’s right, lemurs in North Carolina! You can see them lounging around the Duke Lemur Center, an 84-acre sanctuary that houses some of the rarest and most endangered species.
The City

Head east for a beach day on the Atlantic Ocean, or head west to hike in the stunning Great Smokey Mountains. On a gorgeous Summer day, pack a picnic and head over to the Sarah P. Duke Gardens to enjoy the spectacular flora, and maybe an outdoor concert, free of charge!
Rich in History
For the history buffs, Durham has plenty to offer. Located in what is colloquially known as “Tobacco Road,” the city rose to prominence as a leader in American tobacco production in the 19th century, and roots of that era still run deep in the community. Picturesque historical sites from the Antebellum era dot the landscape of Durham and are certainly worth exploring. Start at the Museum of Durham History, where personal anecdotes and testimonials from Durham’s past transport visitors back in time.

If you’re in the mood for more world flavors, try the Lime and Lemon Grill, known for their traditional northern and southern Indian cuisine. Like any good college town, Durham also has a robust bar scene. Some great local spots include Bar Virgile, known for their quaint cocktails and prohibition era atmosphere. For something milder, try the Durty Bull Brewing Company. They use medieval brewing techniques to create fun and quirky beer flavors.
