Welcome to Concord, NH! Concord is the capital city of New Hampshire, and the third-largest city in the state. One of the oldest cities in America, Concord was incorporated in 1734, and was a prominent city during the American Revolution. Considered the cultural hub of the state, Concord has a rich tradition of art, music, and theatre. The downtown area has an impressive collection of public art on display, and the revitalized main street has become a magnet for new bars and restaurants. Arts and Culture

Concord has a thriving arts scene, and is a haven for creative types of various disciplines. The city is home to a number of art galleries, including the Mill Brook Gallery and Sculpture Garden, which showcases emerging regional artists in an indoor and outdoor setting. Concord also has a large collection of public art and statues along their main street. Some of these public art displays are temporary exhibits by local artists, so there’s a good chance you’ll see something totally new each time you visit. Others are permanent fixtures of the city such as the historical statues of Daniel Webster and Franklin Pierce, and the iconic Turtle Statue in Bicentennial Square.

If you like theater and live music, there are plenty of venues in Concord to check out. The Capitol Center for the Arts is the largest and most successful performing arts venue in New Hampshire. They host everything from Broadway shows, to live music and comedy. Furthermore, Red River Theatres is a popular independent theater that screens newly-released blockbusters, as well as indie movies and cult favorites. They also host the SNOB (Somewhat North of Boston) Film Festival every November, which attracts film buffs from around the country.

History and Other Attractions

Concord’s impressive history dates back to America’s colonial era. Built in 1819, The New Hampshire State House is the oldest state capitol building where both houses of the legislature still meet in the original chambers. The State House is a great backdrop for photos, with it’s magnificent gold dome, and you can also book tours online. Also, tourists and locals alike love visiting Carter Hill Orchard, which has existed under various owners since the 1760’s. Today it’s a modern working orchard open from July to December, and visitors rave about their donuts and apple cider!

One activity that’s great for all ages is vising the McAuliffe-Shepard Discovery Center. This interactive museum features permanent and temporary exhibits on astronomy, aviation, earth and space science, and space history. The discovery center also has a state-of-the-art planetarium and an observatory. The museum is dedicated to Christa McAuliffe, who was selected to be the first teacher in space, and died in the Challenger explosion, and Alan Shepard, who was the first American in space. Both McAuliffe and Shepard were residents of New Hampshire, and McAuliffe taught at Concord High School.

Explore New Hampshire

Concord is the perfect home base for day trips to other points of interest in New Hampshire! It takes about four hours to drive the length of the state, and about two hours to drive across, so it’s easy to explore! Portsmouth is a charming coastal town about an hour from Concord. The beautiful beaches, historic New England homes, and historic seaport have made Portsmouth a popular summer destination for tourists and locals alike. Portsmouth is also home to the USS Albacore, once known as the fastest submarine in the world.

In the winter, New Hampshire is one of the best places in New England for skiing and snowboarding. The tallest peaks in the northeastern United States can be found here, and there are dozens of great ski areas to choose from. Bretton Woods is New Hampshire’s largest ski resort, with 10 lifts, 62 different trails, and three terrain parks. Loon Mountain is the most easily accessible ski area, just 10 minutes off of Interstate 93! Cranmore Mountain is known as a family-friendly ski area with a good mixture of beginner, intermediate and expert terrain. All of these resorts also have non-skiing activities like tubing, snowshoeing, ziplines, and more!

Where to Eat and Drink

There’s no shortage of great restaurants to satisfy your appetite! Revival Kitchen and Bar is run by award winning chef Corey Fletcher, who focuses on farm-to-table dining. They also have an impressive selection of wines and cocktails. Beefside is a more casual dining option that specializes in breakfast, seafood, and comfort favorites.
