Staff Spotlight – Melody Dennis, Senior Rock Star Recruiter!

Let’s get to know Melody Dennis, our newest senior Rock Star Recruiter!

What’s the best part about traveling for you?

Experiencing new cultures, food, landscapes, architecture… and just learning in general. I feel like a child discovering things for the first time.

Are you a dog person or a cat person?

Definitely a dog person. I guess I’m biased because I’m allergic to cats though.

If you had to pick one type of food to eat for the rest of your life, what would it be?

It’s a tie between Thai or Indian.

What’s your favorite outdoor activity?

Hiking. I love being able to see things you can’t see by car and also the peaceful solitude. Outdoor yoga/ picnics are close seconds.

If you had to delete all but three apps from your smartphone, which ones would you keep?

Spotify, GuitarTab, Audible.

What’s your favorite thing about living in Knoxville?

I live right next door to Great Smoky Mountains National Park. It’s less than an hour’s drive away, and I love being in the middle of lots of waterfalls and mountains. Just so much nature! I also like that Knoxville isn’t a huge city but still has plenty of restaurants and outdoor events to attend. The music scene here is great too, and no, it’s not just country music! There’s indie, blues, folk, soul, rock, just so much. I can’t wait for it to be safe again to attend music venues, but for now, the outdoor shows opening up have been awesome.

You win a $5,000 shopping spree to the store of your choice, which store do you pick?

I’ve recently gotten back into playing music and would like a new piano and guitar, so I’d say a music store.

It’s Friday night in Knoxville and you must pick one restaurant to go to, what do you pick and why?

Kaizen is delicious! They have a variety of Asian fusion dishes and lots of vegetarian options. I love their udon soup.

What’s the best vacation you’ve ever taken?

What started out as a 3-week trip in Nepal ended up with me staying for 4 months. Being surrounded by the incredible, vast Himalayas was surreal. I loved connecting with the locals and learning about their lives, religions, history, and country. There was so much to see and do, from trekking to spending time in religious sites, that I just had to spend as much time as I could there.

Who was your celebrity idol growing up?

Mariah Carey. Ha!

If you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go?

There are too many places to choose from! I’d love to spend some time in South America or go back to India since there’s so much more to explore there.

Melody at the Taj Mahal.

What are you currently binge watching?

Catching up on This Is Us.

Favorite movie of all time?

Interstellar.

If you could be a contestant on a reality TV/game show, which show would you pick?

Wheel of Fortune.

If you could have dinner with three famous people dead or alive, who would you pick?

Buddha, Joan Didion, and Robin Williams.

What would you say is your spirit animal?

The cabbage white butterfly, specifically. They remind me of transformation and freedom whenever they’re around.

Coffee.

Alternative/Indie.

Who are the top 3 artists on your Spotify/Itunes?

At the moment, they are Velvet Underground, Khruangbin, and Skinshape.

If you had a superpower, what would it be?

Teleportation. I admit I do like being in airports because you have the thrill of “I’m on my way somewhere!” But man, doing back-to-back long-haul flights can get exhausting when traveling abroad.

What’s one thing you absolutely can’t live without?

Nature.

What’s something your nurses would be surprised to know about you?

I love to naturally connect with and talk with people, so to some, it can be surprising that I once did a 10-day silent meditation retreat in Nepal. It was intense and life-changing! I want to do it again soon.

What’s your favorite thing about being a travel nurse recruiter?

I love being able to swap travel stories with others and meeting people from all over the country everyday.

If you could offer a travel nurse one piece of advice, what would it be?

Strong, honest communication with your recruiter is so important, so they know how to best help you and help build a good relationship.
