Perks of Rural Travel Nursing

Perks of rural travel nursing

Whether you’re a first-time or seasoned traveler, crossing the country presents many opportunities. Selecting ideal assignment locations varies; whether it’s the sunny coasts of California, the musical streets of Austin or Nashville, or the renowned healthcare systems like Duke or Mayo, we can’t overlook the perks of rural travel nursing and what it’s like to be a small town travel nurse.

Advantages of Rural Assignments

One benefit of choosing an assignment in a smaller town is housing affordability. The local hospital’s need for assistance is often well-known within the community, making it easier to receive guidance on accommodations through your agency or connections. From vacation cabins to discounted hotel rates, the options are often more budget-friendly than those in larger cities.

You’ll get a good feel of what buying locally truly means. “Mom and Pop” stores, find farm-fresh goods at roadside stands or weekend farmers’ markets, and the simplicity of getting around—often, everything you need can be within walking distance.

I’ll never forget my small town travel nurse assignments. One in particular led me to find a cozy cabin tucked away in the woods, with a quick 20-minute drive to the hospital. This slight increase in commute was worth the peace, privacy and connection with nature that came with it. No standstill traffic, horns honking, or road rage made my commute enjoyable.

Rural Travel Nurse Living

From the best dining spots to local mom and pop shops, connecting with locals and exploring on your own will quickly build memories as a small town travel nurse. An afternoon stroll downtown might uncover new favorite finds like a family-run bakery or a tiny bookstore that adds a personal and memorable touch to your experience.

Another one of my favorite small-town experiences as a traveler was checking out a local town bakery. This led to me meeting the shop owner. I learned his story; He arrived early to create heavenly fresh baked goods, stayed to greet the customers at the door and then waited on them. Not long before he knew me by name and what my favorite treat was, making each visit memorable.

Small Town Travel Nurse Benefits

Taking on assignments in smaller communities provides an opportunity to pause and find peace in a quieter, simpler life. This change of pace can be a fantastic transition, particularly for travel nurses who are constantly on the move.

Furthermore, being a rural travel nurse, you’ll quickly be welcomed into a smaller community which allows travelers to stand out. Though this might initially lead to curiosity or even suspicion, it allows for an opportunity to make a difference in the community. Simple acts of kindness and genuine care go a very long way in small towns.
