Axis Traveler of the Month June 2024

Meet Cassie Stockton our Axis Traveler of the Month June 2024. This long-time Axis traveler shares her perspective of travel nursing during the unpredictable times of the pandemic and how it’s been better than anticipated since making the career change!

How did you get into travel nursing?

I graduated in 2019, and by 2021, as Covid hit, I started hearing more about travel nursing. The idea intrigued me—learning on the job while exploring new parts of the country sounded perfect. I always wanted to see different places and go on trips, but with a staff job, getting PTO approved was a struggle. Travel nursing became the solution, allowing me to combine my love for nursing with my desire to explore.

What do you enjoy most about your current location?

Right now, I’m on contract in a tiny town called Delta, CO, and it’s one of the most gorgeous places I’ve ever been. The scenery here is breathtaking. Drive in any direction, and you’re greeted with stunning mountain views. One of my favorite spots is Ouray, CO, a charming town near Telluride, CO. It’s close to several national parks, and there are always rock climbing competitions and outdoor activities to watch or enjoy if you’re into those types of sports. This place has quickly become one of my favorite locations.

What would you note as a rewarding experience?

For me, one of the most rewarding aspects of travel nursing has been growing more comfortable with the whole process—whether traveling to new places or navigating contracts. I’ve also cherished the connections I’ve made with patients and coworkers. Hearing their stories and receiving their suggestions has been incredibly fulfilling. Every new location and experience adds another layer to my skills and knowledge.

How do you spend your free time?

You can usually find me hiking or reading when I’m not working. I’m also really into aerial skills, so I make it a point to visit different gyms and connect with coaches wherever I go. It’s become a great community for me outside of travel nursing. And, of course, I travel with my cat, Moose, who’s my little companion on this journey.

From your experience, what advice would you have for travelers?

My advice would be to give travel nursing a try and remember to be flexible. You’ll learn something new at every assignment; there’s always something positive to take away from each hospital. Even if you discover that travel nursing isn’t for you, the experience itself is valuable. You’ll have grown as both a nurse and a person.

How did you discover Axis?

I’ve been working with Charity Crawford at Axis for three years now. I took a week off from bedside nursing to research what it would take to become a traveler. Axis stood out to me immediately. It caught my attention that they had won awards and received so many fantastic reviews. From the start, I noticed the attention to detail that Charity and Karissa provided. It’s meant so much to me to feel like I have a team that truly has my back. Traveling has been an invaluable experience, and I’ve loved trying new things at different stages of my life.
